ISSUES
FAIR AND DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS;  Government derives its just powers from the consent of the governed.  Currently the three County Commissioners are required to be from certain districts and represent those districts.  How is it that all the Commissioners are elected at large from the entire county and not by the district they represent?  Despite being petitioned to change election from at large to by district which only the Commissioners can do (there is no public referendum) they refuse.  This is not fair and democratic elections  put forth in the Sustainability statement made by the current BoCC.  This must change  following is the link and the County definition of Sustainability.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is a long-term goal that seeks to balance environmental, economic and societal needs. This includes:

  • wise use of natural and economic resources
  • energy, fuel and resource efficiency
  • waste reduction
  • reuse and recycling
  • changes to building and land use
  • and a coordinated effort to educate and encourage the broader community to follow suit.

But a truly "sustainable" community goes far beyond basic energy efficiency and pollution reduction. A sustainable community provides for all the needs of its inhabitants (including people, animals and habitats). This includes protecting open spaces, natural habitats and landscapes; ensuring access to basic human needs such as food, housing and health care; encouraging an active community involvement in social, political and community activities; and providing the every-day services that make daily tasks possible - services such as maintaining transportation routes and ensuring fair, accurate, democratic elections.

LAND USE ISSUES;  The County Commissioners have authority over land use in unincorporated county.  Despite pleas from citizens in unincorporated Boulder County to simplify and speed up the sight plan Review SPR process they have made it more complicated.  Plans that call for buying or selling rights  TDR's(you either have them or you don't),  implementing house size limitations,  dictating whom you may hire, what building materials you may use, the list is long. All in attempt to delay or stop citizens from building on their  private property.  Should we sacrifice our rights and liberties for the vision of a few?  absolutely not

OPEN SPACE;  There are currently three taxes for open space.  Tremendous amounts of land have been purchased with public funds yet they are not accessable to the public.  At the same time it has reduced the property tax for our schools and services such as fire protection that still must be available to fight fires on these lands.  Instead of being Multi-use like our federal lands they are restrictive.  In a county where every square inch is zoned  why are we purchasing agricultural land and then leasing it back to the original owner? How much opens space purchase is neccessary.  How much effort should be made to maintain them and make them public friendly- more than we are doing now.
